On yet another cool night this year, it’s time to have an appropriate beer to try to warm up a little so I’m plumping for an oatmeal stout by newbie brewery (for me at least) All Beers Conspiracy as I’ve just had one other beer from them which was an IPA and was perfectly fine. This one has caramel and vanilla added to it so I’m hoping it won’t be too sweet.

It’s got a frothy light beige head which slowly settles and it seems clear and has a very dark reddish brown colour. The toffee and vanilla are very clear from the first sniff as well as that sweet porridge like oatmeal aroma so it seems sweetness is the main element here. There are some roasted malt notes too which combine with the toffee to give a burnt toffee aroma. There’s a bit of chocolate too and to lesser extent a touch of milky coffee.

The carbonation is quite high and it feels smooth and silky in the mouth. So, it is on the sweet side but there is some balance here. There’s lots of caramel and burnt toffee as well as the vanilla adding to the creamy texture and taste. There’s chocolate and coffee and a light bitterness to round off the sweetness. It’s quite elegant and smooth but I do prefer drier stouts in general but it isn’t badly made just not really to my taste. It’s easy to drink though and clean and fresh.

Score: 3.7
